Bilingual and Multilingual Learning (BML)
Cedar International School welcomes students of all linguistic backgrounds. We believe that our multicultural and multilingual classrooms help to develop open-minded, balanced, global citizens. We recognize multilingualism as a right and a resource for learning. We strive to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 of “[ensuring] inclusive and equitable quality education” by encouraging our students to learn through their entire language repertoire, which may include home languages other than English.
Not only do we acknowledge the value of the various languages spoken within our school community, but we actively encourage the maintenance of home languages. This benefits students’ overall academic achievement.
The Bilingual and Multilingual Learning (BML) Coordinator works with students, teachers and families to encourage and support the development or maintenance of home languages, as well as to provide support where needed, for the development of academic English. In keeping with current best practices informed by research, bilingual or multilingual students are included in the mainstream classroom.
