The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP) at Cedar International School

The philosophical and pedagogical culmination of an IB education is found in the I.B. Diploma Programme (DP). Cedar International School has been successfully offering the DP since 2008, and we encourage all students to participate. At Cedar we believe the skills that are developed over this two-year programme are an invaluable preparation for life after Cedar, and as a school we feel privileged to be part of this international community.

The DP was the first programme offered by the IB and aimed to provide a rigorous programme incorporating the academic and social development of truly internationally minded students. Since its establishment in 1968, it has gained a reputation for delivering a stringent but balanced education and in May 2015 there were 2795 schools offering the programme in 143 countries worldwide.

The DP aims to develop students who:

  • have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge
  • flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  • study at least two languages
  • excel in traditional academic subjects
  • explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course.

The DP curriculum is made up of six subjects and a core. The core is key to students success and focuses on transferable skills that apply both within and outside the classroom. The three core elements are:

  • Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
  • The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  • Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
