Dear Cedar Families,
On Friday, members of the Class of 2016 enjoyed their last day of classes at Cedar. As the school’s largest senior class to date, at 17 members, they have accumulated a long list of offers from impressive universities, including Kings College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Toronto, University of Leicester, University of Nottingham, University of Kent, University of Birmingham, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and more!
Students have three weeks of IB exams ahead of them, so their journey is not yet over, but it is worth marking this milestone as we wish them luck with the exams ahead. They will be sitting the largest selection of IB diploma exams yet, including high level STEM courses such as DP Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics—but they are a committed group and well prepared. We look forward to celebrating the culmination of their Cedar journey at graduation in June.
Of all the good things happening at Cedar, one of the most exciting is the current commitment to increase collaboration with other schools in the BVI. Two exciting examples of this are current initiatives partnering Cedar with Francis Lettsome Primary School and with St. George’s Secondary School. Harneys has sponsored a programme called “Science Saturdays at Cedar,” bringing together Cedar science labs, teachers and resources with students from Francis Lettsome Primary School for four Saturday morning sessions of engaging science experiments on Cedar’s campus in April and May. After two sessions with the enthusiastic students from FLPS, it has been an inspiring success!
Equally exciting is our growing partnership with St. George’s Secondary School. In June, Cedar and St. George’s are joining forces to bring down a writing professor from Brown University to conduct a week long pre-college writing workshop for students in both schools. The week of collaboration will then be capped by a first for the BVI: a collaborative Scholarship Gala, benefiting both Cedar and St. George’s, as we both strive to increase access to our programmes for talented students in the BVI. This landmark Gala will be held on Peter Island on Saturday, June 18.
We wish to thank the Board and Administration of St. George’s for being enthusiastic partners in this new direction. It is a firm acknowledgment by all parties that we can have even greater impact in preparing students for success, providing them a robust academic experience, and securing a strong future for the BVI community when we work together toward a common cause. It is indeed exciting times for education in the BVI.
Sincerely,
Scott Crawford, Director
